Planting Today, Nourishing Tomorrow: A Fruit Orchard Takes Root at CasaupendoAllison Sims and Leslie Wathen Join Casaupendo Children in Planting
Fruit Trees for Future Generations
What does it mean to
plant a tree whose fruit may nourish children for years to come? At Casaupendo, it
means planting hope for a future you may never personally see.
During their August
2026 visit to Casaupendo in Kitale, Kenya, Board Member Allison Sims
and visiting volunteer Leslie Wathen joined our children in planting
several fruit trees across the Casaupendo campus. What began as a hands-on
activity with the children soon became something much more meaningful:
 A Casaupendo fruit
orchard was born.
More Than Planting Trees
With hands in the
soil, our children worked alongside Allison and Leslie to plant young fruit
trees that we hope will one day provide shade, beauty, learning opportunities,
and fresh fruit for the children at Casaupendo.
For the children, the
activity was also a practical life-skills lesson.
They learned that a
tree must be planted, watered, protected, and patiently nurtured before it can
bear fruit. In many ways, the lesson reflects our work at Casaupendo itself.
 Children, too,
flourish when they are loved, nurtured, educated, protected, and given time to
grow.
The orchard therefore
represents much more than trees in the ground. It represents our belief in investing
today for a future that may take years to fully unfold.
Growing Food. Growing Skills. Growing Responsibility.
Life-skills
development is an important part of the Casaupendo approach to caring for
orphaned and vulnerable children in Kenya.
 Through gardening,
agriculture, sewing, baking, computer skills, arts and other practical
activities, our children have opportunities to learn beyond the classroom and
develop skills that encourage responsibility, confidence, creativity, and
independence.
Planting the fruit
orchard gave the children another opportunity to learn by doing.
As they continue
caring for these trees, they can experience the entire journey—from planting
and nurturing a young seedling to watching it mature and eventually produce
fruit.
That is education that
grows right alongside them.
A Living Legacy of Service
Long after Allison and
Leslie returned home, the trees remained.
They will continue
requiring water.
They will grow new
branches and leaves.
And, with proper care
and suitable growing conditions, we hope they will eventually produce fruit
that children can pick and enjoy.
That is what makes
this orchard particularly special.
It is a living legacy.
 Each growing tree can
remind our children of Allison and Leslie’s Legacy. They stood beside the
children on Kenyan soil, placed their hands in the earth alongside them, and
invested in something intended to benefit children for generations to come.
To Allison Sims and
Leslie Wathen, thank you for planting more than trees at Casaupendo. Thank
you for planting memories, knowledge, hope, and possibility.
From a Children's Home to a Sustainable Future
At Casaupendo, our
vision extends beyond meeting immediate needs.
Providing nutritious
meals today is essential. But we must also continue asking:
How can we strengthen
food security for tomorrow?
How can our land
become part of the children's learning environment?
How can we teach
children skills that encourage self-reliance?
How can every resource
entrusted to us create lasting impact?
The Casaupendo fruit
orchard is one small but meaningful part of that larger vision.
As these trees grow,
we hope the orchard will contribute to our children's nutrition while serving
as a practical learning space where children can develop agricultural
knowledge, environmental responsibility, patience, and stewardship.

Every tree begins
small.
 So does every dream.
At Casaupendo, we have
seen what can happen when compassionate people choose to plant something
today—whether that seed is education, nutrition, counseling, healthcare, a
practical skill, or a fruit tree.
With love and
consistent care, small beginnings can grow into something extraordinary.
And perhaps years from
now, a child will reach into the branches of one of these trees, pick a piece
of fruit, and enjoy the harvest of a seed planted in love.
That is the kind of
legacy we want to grow at Casaupendo.
